Adipose tissue, comprising white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT), is a specialized connective tissue that serves essential functions in the human body. It acts as a site for energy storage, insulation, and endocrine regulation. This comprehensive review explores the structure, function, and metabolic significance of adipose tissue. It discusses the roles of WAT and BAT, including their respective contributions to energy storage and thermogenesis. The review highlights the endocrine regulation of adipose tissue, focusing on the secretion of adipokines and their implications for metabolic health. Furthermore, it discusses the metabolic significance of adipose tissue in relation to obesity, insulin resistance, and lipid metabolism. The regulation of adipose tissue by genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors is also examined.
