Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Education Communication

Peter Kibe Ngugi

The history of pedagogy reflects many changes in methodology, curriculum and institutional structure and management but one thing that seems to transcend time is the central role of the classroom teacher. At all levels of learning from the preparatory to higher levels of education, the role of the instructor remains paramount. Even informally, in apprenticeship the trainer plays a significant role in transmission and imparting of knowledge. Educationists have made bold attempts to integrate communication technologies to enrich learning with tremendous success but they all serve to complement the role of the teacher. The education fraternity can be noted without fear of contradiction to be the greatest beneficially of the printing technology. Discoveries of other communication technologies like the motion pictures, the television, radio, computer, internet and digital technologies have all played significant roles in improving transmission of educational instructions. The new media hold promise of stealing the show from the classroom teacher more than any other communication technology so far discovered. There is need to urgently assess the impact these new media technologies have had on learning and their contribution to quality compared to older technologies and the traditional classroom teacher. However, this is not the focus of this paper. The concern of this paper is to explore the variety of new media technologies available for learning and how they can be used to enrich learning. Through literature review method this article poignantly demonstrates how the new media is being used to complement the efforts of the classroom instructor through offline and online presentations, publishing online and offline, social networking, access, connectivity ,search, analytical tools, content creation and design and providing a rich online resources. “The newly released ICT figures confirm once again that information and communication technologies continue to be the key drivers of the information society,” ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun I. Touré.

What Say the Human Wisdom, the Philosophy and Culture and What Says the Bible on the Sense of the Human Life, on its Destination

Olkhovsky VS

This Christian philosophical paper analyses the sense of human life. The problem of the life sense many thinkers of the past had been tried to solve for a long time. It is in the center of the attention of the modern philosophy. However the mono-semantic answer to the question about the life sense in the human philosophy does not exist. Various philosophers and thinkers include in the notion of the life sense different contents. And there are only Christian men and women who found the life, full up of the sense. They began from that, that for them the sense of human life is absurd to seek in themselves, in the dark, senseless life of the everyday experience. They found the life intelligent, or, that is the same, obtained the Alive Sense, accepted Christ and went with him.

Political Godfather-Son Conflict in South-Western Nigeria, 2004-2006: The Role of the Press

Muyiwa Popoola

Political godfather-son conflict has been upsetting Nigeria’s development. The conflict, rooted in clash of values, interest, needs and resources, involved political office holders in top hierarchy of government. There have been scholarly works on the gate-keeping and agenda setting role of the media in political conflicts, but the actual role the Nigerian media play in political godfather-son conflict is inadequate in literature. Thus, this study was carried out to determine how selected newspapers reported such conflict between a former State Governor, Rasheed Ladoja and a political godfather Lamidi Adedibu, in Oyo State, South Western Nigeria. The study period was 2004 to 2006 when the conflict heightened and escalated to physical violence and civil unrest. Five nationally-circulated newspapers were selected for the study, namely: Daily Champion, Daily Trust, Nigerian Tribune, The Guardian and The Punch. Purposive sampling was used to select 105 editorial items in 90 editions of the selected newspapers. The study adopted dialectical hermeneutics in data gathering and analysis. This was done to investigate partisanship, fairness, bias and largely the extent of social responsibility displayed in reporting the conflict by the newspapers. It was discovered that the vast reportage of the conflicts was largely negative as the newspapers overwhelmingly published stories that contributed to escalation of the conflicts. The reportage reflected incitement, partisanship and bias on the part of the newspapers. The reportage could not have helped in reconciling the conflicting parties, but fuelled the conflicts to violence and public unrest. The reportage was socially irresponsible and unethical journalistic practice has become a constraint to the development of democracy in Nigeria. The Nigerian press need to be development oriented by practising peace journalism. This will advance Nigeria’s democracy, as well as help prevent any military intervention in Nigeria’s politics in the future.
