Design of a 10T Flake Pile Roller Stand

Greg Wheatley

This article provides a summary of the design and operating parameters for a 10T Flake Pile Roller Stand. The 10T Flake Pile Roller Stand is designed to reduce the force required to install conveyor belt that has been pre-spliced and assembled into a flake pile. The performance requirements of the 10T Flake Pile Roller Stand were initially determined through Excel spreadsheet calculations. Finite element analysis was used to determine the structural stresses induced by the belt tension during operation within the pulley shell, the pulley shaft and the stand. The maximum belt tension was 10 tonnes. Australian Standard AS3990 Mechanical Equipment–Steelwork has been utilized for determining the suitability of the design. The design meets the requirements of the standard for the proposed belt tension.

Design of a Conveyor Belt Turning Frame

Greg Wheatley

The following report provides a summary of the design and operating parameters for a 10T 90° Turning Frame. The 10T 90° Turning Frame is designed to change the direction of the conveyor belt that is being installed by 90° and also to flip the conveyor belt over. Finite element analysis was used to determine the structural stresses induced by the belt tension during operation. The maximum belt tension was 10 tonnes. The maximum angular deflection from horizontal was also modelled. The stress resulting on the belt was determined to ensure that this did not exceed 2.8MPa which is the maximum the belt can withstand without damage. This report also addresses the lifting of the frame whilst fully assembled. Australian Standard AS3990 Mechanical Equipment – Steelwork has been utilized for determining the suitability of the design. The design meets the requirements of the standard for the proposed belt tension. The stress does not exceed allowable stress recommendations.

Design of Industrial Lifting Crate Rated for 1 Tonne Load

Greg Wheatley

This article provides a summary of the design and operating parameters for the Lifting Crate. Finite element analysis via Autodesk Inventor was used to determine the structural stresses induced by the forces. A 2350 kg load has been nominated for design purposes in order to satisfy a working load limit of 1000 kg through Australian Standard AS4991 Lifting Devices and AS3990 Mechanical Equipment – Steelwork. The standards have been utilized for determining the suitability of the design. The design meets the requirements of the standards for the proposed loads.

Construction Project Management in Moroccan Small and Medium Enterprises: Exploring the Practices

Ezziadi Abdelali

Projects, particularly the most complex, mobilize a heterogeneity of stakeholders that strongly influence their success. This heterogeneity means a diversity and multiplicity of needs and expectations, often conflicting, of the same project. It is therefore unlikely to meet all the expectations of all stakeholders. Thus, the construction and Public Works SME of faces the challenge of evaluating. We will rely on the results of a study of 34 Moroccan SMEs operating in the construction sector to identify the triptych management practices cost, quality and time in these SMEs.

India’s Saddlery and Harness Sector: Exports and Its Challenges

Mohamed Rafiuddin and Satyanarayana G

Indian Leather Industry occupies a place of prominence in the Indian economy in view of its massive potential for employment, growth and exports. India has well proven itself as a potential sourcing destination for Leather product especially Saddlery and Harness. Though India is positioned as the 3rd largest exporter of Saddlery and Harness in the world, India accounts for a share of less than 10% in the global Saddlery and Harness import and hence there is a huge scope to enhance exports and increase the market share. The author believes that an explanation of the challenges faced by Indian Leather Industry in exports of Saddlery and Harness would enrich our understanding of complexity in business.

Statistical Forecasting Modeling to Predict Inventory Demand in Motorcycle Industry: Case Study

Lishura Chen

A comprehensive method of finding seasonal patterns of demand and the accurate prediction of future demands are still critical elements for different industries especially in manufacturing companies as it contributes to effective planning and operation. In this paper, a statistical forecasting model has been proposed and implemented in a motorcycle accessories manufacturing company in the USA. Dataset for a 7-year timeframe of historical sales data has been mined, cleaned, and compiled using Python programming. Results have been compared to the conventional forecasting model used by the company. Based on this comparison, using the proposed statistical forecasting model can improve the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) by almost 61% and the mean squared error (MSE) by 82%. These improvements will drastically improve the chance of consistently maintaining the right levels of inventory in the right place and at the right time. It also provides the opportunity of ensuring the safety stock of its inventory is sized correctly to avoid inflated carrying costs and lost sales orders due to stock outs.

Using Lean Techniques and Simulation to Improve the Efficiency of Engineered Wood Production: A Case Study in a Small Factory

Marzieh Ghiyasinasab, Lehoux N, Ménard S and Cloutier C

Purpose: Modular construction manufacturing (MCM) has been recognized as an efficient solution to improve standardization and increase efficiency in the construction industry. Production of engineered wood for construction projects may be considered as a type of MCM. The production system of design-specific engineered wood contains some repeatable production processes while each project contains its unique design and specifications. Glued laminated timber (glulam) is a type of engineered wood product which is applicable to construction as an environment-friendly product. Production of curved glulam generally has longer production time than the straight glulam beam. This paper considers improvements in the production of glulam by investigating the sources of waste in the production processes.
Design/Methodology/Approach: A simulation model is built for glulam production and validated with a case-study for a gridshell project in a small and medium-sized enterprise (SME). Sources of waste are identified, lean methods are suggested for improvement and lean solutions are tested in the simulation model.
Findings and Originality/Value: The results demonstrate improvements in cycle time and wait time. Since complete elimination of waste may be costly and difficult for an SME when beginning to implement lean techniques, the impact of applying only 50% elimination of non-value adding activities is compared with 100% elimination.

Implementation of Control Chart for Statistical Process Control Considering Temperature and Humidity Effect in Synthetic Staple Fiber Industry

Abu Md. Saifuddoha and Islam MS

The purpose of this paper is to identify various fluctuations of temperature and humidity effecting synthetic staple fibers quality such as strength and tenacity as a final finished product and address these fluctuations effect through implementation of control chart for establishing statistical process control over synthetic fiber production process. Critical observations and test results are analyzed to show that temperature and humidity effect over synthetic staple fiber quality such as strength and tenacity. Establishing statistical process control in the synthetic staple fiber processing sector is one key to improving the quality of synthetic staple fiber sector considering temperature and humidity effect. The resultant variations and fluctuations are addressed through categorizing various kinds of fiber by implementing control chart. The paper addresses the fluctuations and variations of synthetic fiber quality such as strength and tenacity due to temperature and humidity effect in the production processing of synthetic fiber industry, using control chart as an approach to solve these variations which was hardly attempted before. Strength and tenacity individually prioritized to reduce fluctuations into the entire production process system.
